What is 3D Secure authentication
3D Secure authentication secures online card payments. Its purpose is to authenticate that the payment is being made by the authorized cardholder.
How 3D Secure payment authentication works
During payment on the payment gateway, the customer enters their card details (card number, expiry date, CVV code) and confirms the payment. The customer's bank evaluates the payment and chooses one of the following procedures:
Payment without 3D Secure authentication: The payment takes place immediately in the background without requiring the customer to confirm anything.
Payment with 3D Secure authentication: The bank asks the customer to confirm the payment, most often in their mobile banking app.
Exceptions
An exception to 3D Secure authentication is Apple Pay. With Apple Pay, payment authentication takes place directly on the phone or computer (using Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode). Therefore, further authentication via 3D Secure, e.g. in mobile banking, is no longer required.
