For card payments, you can influence how often 3D Secure authentication will be required from your customers. You can choose from three modes depending on whether you prefer checkout speed or maximum security.
3D Secure authentication modes
Standard 3D Secure authentication
Standard 3D Secure authentication represents a balance between security and customer convenience. It is based on the authentication mechanism required by card associations (Visa, Mastercard) and legislation.
In this mode, the payment is evaluated directly by the customer's bank. Depending on the level of risk, the bank either prompts the customer for 3D Secure authentication (e.g. by confirming in their mobile banking app) or approves the payment in the background without requiring authentication by the customer.
Standard 3D Secure authentication is the default setting of the Comgate payment gateway.
Skipping 3D Secure authentication
Skipping 3D Secure helps speed up the checkout process because the customer does not have to approve the payment in their mobile banking app.
The risk assessment of the payment takes place in two steps:
Assessment by the Comgate gateway: The payment gateway assesses the payment based on a wider range of data. This allows more payments than usual to be identified as low-risk.
Approval by the customer's bank: If the Comgate gateway evaluates the payment as low-risk, it requests the customer's bank to skip 3D Secure authentication. If the bank agrees, it approves the payment in the background and does not require authentication by the customer.
If the customer's bank evaluates the payment as risky, it will still request 3D Secure authentication from the customer in this mode.
Evaluated criteria
Transaction amount: for card payments up to CZK 2,500/EUR 100, the payment will be marked as low-risk
Payment history on the gateway: an above-average number of transactions by a single payer within a short period is evaluated as risky
Information about the card used: e.g. the payment card BIN code
The device used to make the payment (e.g. mobile phone)
Merchant's business segment
Enforcing 3D Secure authentication (in preparation)
This mode is intended for segments with a high risk of payment fraud, such as sales of software or other intangible goods. Emphasis is placed on verifying the identity of the payer.
The Comgate payment gateway will request 3D Secure authentication from the customer's bank for all card payments.
Fees
Standard 3D Secure authentication is free of charge.
Skipping 3D Secure authentication is an additional service charged according to the current price list (the fee is only charged for payments where 3D Secure authentication was skipped).
Enforcing 3D Secure authentication is free of charge.
